How can i help my hair?

i am a black teen and i stopped perming my hair months ago. Now the perm is almost completely grown out. I know the ends of my hair (that still have the perm) are probably dead? I heard that in order for my hair to grow nicely i have to cut those dead ends off, but my hair is kind of short and i wear it pulled back into a small bun and the ends of my hair is the main source of my hair's length. Also since the perm, ends of strands of my hair have broken off so now when i try to slick it back i have small frizzies that won't slick down. that problem is just for the exterior of my hair (meaning when i part my hair the inner hair is nice shiny, with no frizzies.) I have tried a lot of different gels including Loreal, Garnier, and Jam. i would love to try a new hairstyle that i'm comfortable with, as i've had my current one for a looooong time. i now straighten my hair with heat but i have swimming at school (and wear a swim cap) but the water still kills the straight style. help..

Gel has a lot of ingredients in it that can dry your hair out. In your hair's transitioning state, I would focus more on moisture, especially for the point where your virgin hair meets the relaxed ends, known as the demarcation line. As far as styles, you can try two strand twists with your own hair that can be pinned up or back, or get extensions until your hair is at a length you are comfortable with. Also, excessive heat can also add to dryness and the brittle nature of your strands. You can twist your hair while wet, let it dry and untwist for a twist-out...same thing with braids. Try these sites for more info...and good luck with your transition!

I Suggest that you first trim your ends. The chemical process that you're describing(perm) is most likely to be a relaxer. A perm is a chemical process used to make ones hair curly i.e. Jerri Curl or what Caucasian people use too make their hair curly or wavy. A relaxer is what is used to make curly or kinky hair straight. Secondly, during the time of the year that you have too swim @ school make sure that you are using, conditioner that is formulated for swimmers. Stop using gels with alcohol. The best gel that I have come across is by Organic Root Stimulator Lock %26amp; Twist Gel. Look in some natural black hairstyle books. Hair is an accessory, have fun change it up.

Swimming pool chlorine is very hard on your hair, try a more watertight swim cap style. See this page about making a swim band to wear under a more protective cap to help you stay dryer in the pool.
