It's medium-short (it barely touches my shoulders), cut into layers, and thick.

I've tried this liquid-spray wax to spike it up but I think I'm doing it wrong because all that happens is that it just falls back down :/

you need to go to the salon and have them get your hair more of that style. Then you need to get a straightener and heat syrum stuff. And Straighten your hair. You could also use pomade to make it stickout ish. that would look cool.

Unless you cut it I'm not sure It will look like his. You need to cut it in chunky pieces and apply extra strength gel to it. It also helps to get one of those blow out kits to help achieve that 'crazed' look. I think the problem is is that your hair might be too straight. A kit and some scissors would do you nicely.
